As a small business owner you
probably already have some sort of Website, right ?
In fact chances are you have had a
Website for several years, so the question is has your
business benefited from the Google Internet Search explosion
or was it your competitors ?
Google has become so popular that
it has entered our language as a verb, you no longer
look something up you "Google it" there are millions
and millions of search enquiries a day, online
search has changed just about everything even traditional monopolies like
printed phone books.
Do you get more enquiries from the Internet
every day than you can handle
?
We are not Website Designers,
we are a new type of business consultants called
Search Engine Marketing Specialists ( SEM ) sometimes you will also
hear the term Search Engine Optimization
Consultants ( SEO ).
Search Engine Marketers work with small
business owners like you, to help them and their
website designer to drive internet traffic ( people
- prospects - customers ) to your existing website
and then to convert that traffic into customers.
We are not in business to build
you a new website and we don't run a website that we want you to
advertise on - most of the time our service comes by
simply recommending small adjustments and strategies
that can be applied to your
existing website that can have a truly profound
effect on how the Search Engine Marketing positions you in
the results pages.
What sort of
changes do we recommend ?
The thing I like best about what
we do is that most of the answers that we provide
are so obvious ( once you have heard
them of course ) that most to the time our customers
end up saying things like " that's so obvious, why
didn't I know that ?" or " why
haven't we done that already ? "
The reason I like this so much is
it makes what we have to offer really easy to sell,
we sell information and advice on Search
Engine Marketing - my newsletter
is free, my instructional DVD is just $25 and we
also offer one on one website reviews and
consultations.
We don't make any bones about
why we are here,
we give away enough of what we know for free
through my newsletter that business owners like you
that read the free stuff are then willing to to buy my
DVD or engage us as Search Marketing consultants without any
need to hard sell
at all.
A simple
example of the type of advice we recommend to
business owners:
It is widely accepted that there
are over 100 factors that search engines consider
when ranking your website in their listings. Some of
these factors are highly speculative and some are
well documented by the search engines themselves and
accepted as fact.
One of the accepted facts is that
you can say anything you like on about your business
on your website, anyone can and people often do,
indulge in a little shameless self promotion, maybe
even stretching the truth - just a little : )
Its a little bit like a reading a
resume, and any small business owner knows that
unless you know the candidate personally its wise to
check a few references before making a hiring
decision.
Search Engines like your Marketing
Materials ( your website ) to
have "references" as well.
They do this by looking
to see if anyone reputable from your industry
is willing to recommend your website. Websites
recommend one another in this way by placing a link
from their site to another site, this link is seen
as a "vote of confidence" in your site from someone
in the Industry.
Tip Number 1:
Inbound Links
Most people have heard of this
concept of "links" being important, few people know just
how powerful it can be to have just 50 - 100 great
links coming into your site from established and
reputable companies in your Industry.
My advice in this area is this,
set aside trying to generate 1000's of links for
your site. You don't need 1000's of
links unless you are in a highly competitive online
market, and even then you will get little joy from
1000's of poor quality links, high quality links
count ( I will explain what
we mean by high quality links in a minute ) suffice
it to say that you will get a lot more bang for your
buck from the search engines if you get 50 - 100 of
the right types of links pointing at your site.
So how many
links do you have pointing at your site now ?
Great question, here is a free
tool that I love from Yahoo! There are lots of tools
like this one, each of the major search engines have
similar tools, there are even some 3rd party tools
that show you all the results from the major search
engines at once. Search Engine Marketing teams like
mine use all sorts of interesting analysis tools -
many are free when
you know where to find them and we will explain all
that and much more.
All of these types of tools do the
same job they tell you how many links the search engines see pointing at your site right now, at
a snapshot in time.
http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/new/
Click on this link and type in
your website domain in the box at the very top of
the page and then click the button "Explore URL " to
see how many links you currently have, the answer might surprise you
a lot often small businesses don't have many at all - you need to click on the
"inbound links" tab in the results.
Also if you scan the results shown
and see a link from your own site you need to
discount that as
what it is saying is that is a link from one page on
your site back onto your own site.
If you have too few you can
appreciate that the search engines will not treat
you very seriously - quite bluntly you have no
online references.
So how do you
get the right types of links pointing at you site ?
As with most of the things we will
guide you on the answer is actually remarkably
simple.
If your in business you probably
have suppliers of some description, maybe you have a handful, maybe you have a lot.
Suppliers generally want to keep
you happy as a customer and we have found that if
you approach your suppliers and politely explain
that you are trying to improve the effectiveness
of your website and doing so will help you sell more
of their products they are generally
more than willing to help you out - after all its in
their interest to do so its their product sales
as well right.
I suggest that one of the best way
to start to generate "website references" for your
small business website is to write an email to all
your suppliers and ask them to place a link on their
website pointed at yours, don't get your website
designer to do, do it yourself, good links are
hard to get and they are extremely valuable, you
have the relationship and you need to leverage it,
of course you can get someone to send the letter out but write it yourself and and send it to
your contacts in your suppliers company asking for their support, webmasters get
link requests al the time and its the personal touch
and contacts that will break thorough the clutter of
requests to get you a
result.
On my DVD we even provide an
example of the type of letter that you can
personalize before sending to your suppliers asking
for a link.
Remember relevancy here is of
utmost importance, if your a builder you will get
more "juice" from a company that makes, sells or
distributes "building supplies" than you will from a company from an unrelated industry like
"hairdressing"
Doesn't
my Web Designer know all this stuff about Search
Engine Marketing ?
The fact is that most website
designers are fundamentally in the business of
building and hosting websites, making them look good and
making them function correctly.
Most website designers are
technically trained in Graphic Design not Search
Engine
Marketing.
Search Engine Marketing is a very
specialist field and although growing rapidly as
businesses understand what can be done it is still
not taught as a formal skills it is a learnt
skill set.
Just like this concept of getting
a small number of quality links pointing at your
website as a vote of confidence is
quite obvious when its laid out like this we have a
ton of great, easy to implement advise for your
website.
